02 Jan Quick Fire Questions – Eilish McColgan

How did you get into Athletics?
I started athletics at Primary School as my P.E teacher decided to enter me into the local XC race. I had never done any running before but absolutely loved it. I think i was about 4th but a volunteer from the local athletics group invited me along to training and i haven’t looked back since!
What is your greatest achievement to date?
Making the Olympic team has definitely been my largest achievement. When it was announced that London won the 2012 bid – i had never even considered the idea that i would possibly have a chance of making the team. I was nowhere near the qualifying times – so the fact that I changed my lifestyle completely and managed to lower my times, so much so, and make the Olympic Team – really was my greatest achievement by far.
Biggest weekly mileage so far?
This summer due to a previous foot injury I have only been able to run 45-55 miles max. This winter my main aim is to increase this and hopefully be able to gain some more endurance.
Who is your sporting hero?
Paula Radcliffe – greatest female athlete of all time. Grete Waitz who gave my mum some advice over the years and whom i was very fortunate to have met several times, and of course my mother who has coached me from the age of 12.
What is your favourite sport other than athletics?
To be honest, I don’t really watch any other sports! I only really watch other sports during the Olympics (shameful – i know…) haha
What is your favourite film?
The Notebook (standard girl film).. Butterfly effect (purely for Ashton Kutcher).
If you had the ability to fly, where would you fly to on your first trip and why?
Maldives – for the biggest holiday ever. I would be seriously considering about never returning to Scotland ever again! It’s just somewhere that I’ve always wanted to visit. Being an athlete – i’ve been extremely fortunate to have visited loads of different countries but obviously never somewhere exotic like that!
What is your favourite food and how often do you get to eat it?
Probably chocolate.. It’s just something I cannot live without. I’m going to have to bring a quite substantial stash with me to Kenya when I head out there for training.
If you could go on a date with anyone who would it be?
No idea! David Gandy (the D&G man…) but it would maybe be quite boring – so i’m gonna go with Usain Bolt as i reckon there wouldn’t be a dull moment!
Within 10 years I will be…………………………………….
Hopefully still running and enjoying it as much as i currently do.
