National Anthem -Have England Got It Wrong ?
    .
CCG. ,Who decided to pick ‘Jerusalem’ for England’s ‘National Anthem ‘ ? Have they made the right choice? I would have preferred and think more appropriate would have been “Land of Hope and Glory” ? ie same as used for Rugby,I think.

I don’t have strong thoughts on this matter because I have never gotten around to looking at the lyrics before, until now…
    .

And did those feet in ancient time
    Walk upon England’s mountain green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
    On England’s pleasant pastures seen?
    And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
    And was Jerusalem builded here
    Among those dark satanic mills?
    .
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
    Till we have built Jerusalem
In England’s green and pleasant land.

Land of hope and glory, mother of the free
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet

With words like “Among those dark satanic mills?” Makes me think of all those ‘evil ‘athletic and officials north of Watford Gap………so perhaps ‘Jerusalem’ is more appropriate than Land of Hope and Glory…….

SLL, sorry I took so long to respond but as you people claim expertise in the sport, I assumed that such clever types as you all are, will have known the following:
1.Rugby and Football do not use Elgar’s ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ but rather Arne’s ‘God save the King/Queen’ (given it was created as an anti-Scots piece calling for the protection of a German-non English born-king against an invasion from the north, an odd choice for a British national Anthem) even stranger to be used as hymn for England alone.
2.Blake/Parry’s’Jerusalem’ was chosen by Chosen by the Commonwealth Team members in a poll prior to New Dehli in 2008.

However, why would us trolls/foreigners know anything such as this?
