    ‘ who was a bit unlucky? ‘

Alison Leonards should have been selected. The UK selection criteria is just simply wrong.

Several encouraging results at European Athletics Youth Championships Tblisi, from GB u17yr’s….eg .Gold and Silver in the girls 800m…..And looking at Power of 10 rankings we now have 6 girls already running 2min 06 this year.. This is the highest number of u17r girls running under 2.07 for at least 5 years..The sport (NGB) should do all possible to encourage these girls to continue for another 4 to 8 years….So UKA/GB need to change their ridiculous selection policy. They need to consider what Athletes, Parents, Coaches, Clubs and athletic fans want and expect regarding selection for major events…..Ie. If there’s a 3rd space vacant then fill it with the 3rd best GB has to offer.

My old mucker John Thresher, who lives in Toronto and was CEO of Athletics Canada has emailed his thoughts on that country’s Rio prospects. This is what he said:-

Here are some potential Canadian medallists to watch for in Rio.

My favourite in the 800m, -Melissa Bishop, new Canadian record in Edmonton 2016-1:57:.43

    Brianne Thiessen-Eaton Heptathlon, 1st Gotzis 6,795 (rec. 6,808)

    Damien Warner-Decathlon, 1st Gotzis 8,523 (Rec. 8,695) Also ran 10.15 for 100m this year!

Andre de Grasse 100/200 ran 9.99 and 20.16 this year
Shawn Barber in the PV with 5.91 this year. Surprise Gold Medal World’s last year.

Relay-4x100m looks good with De Grasse, Aaron Brown 9.96/20.00 and Rodney Brendon 19.96 200m this year.

Derek Drouin High Jump 2:38m this year (his Canadian record is 2;40m)

Shawn Barber Pole Vault, 5.91 this year and surprise world gold medallist last year

Ahmed Mohammed 5000m 13:01:74 new Canadian record,3rd in Eugene this year.

Thomas; Thanks for posting your ‘2016 highlights’ as I’m not a ‘blog nor tweet’ follower .
Its natural, for me at least , to quickly forget some of the fanatic world records and remarkable achievements , particularly by non Brits with names that don’t roll off my tongue too easily….hence why I personally tend to forget them. But your report was an excellent reminder and an interesting read. I agree with you with your choice of Male Performance of the Year – WAYDE VAN NIEKERK….and look forward to seeing him compete in London this summer.
