Hank: Thank you, I appreciate you just taking the time to read it! I feel there is not enough coverage of the sport or people who write about the actual athletics enough, so I’m filling my own void if nothing else!
Pete M: Completely agree, its just a shame it took this year for more people to realise it. Thanks for reading!
Thanks for your post Thomas with you suggestions for how to engage more people to be engaged with Athletics….keep them coming. For what its worth my comments with regards your numbered paras:
2.I don’t really feel engaged when watching the Diamond League . ..and my friends who have a passing interest in Athletics do find it ‘boring’ .eg They have no idea who most of the athletes are , and to them look all alike in the same sponsors kit. They would prefer to see the National or Club vests with a perhaps a sponsors logo 4 x4 inch on the vests. This would help them identify and cheer someone from a club or country…and not Nike.
3.Athletics on TV , like Football, does have to be live. In fact I tend to watch the highlights on Match of the Day…rather than 2 hours of live football. Same should perhaps be with Athletics…even if its (say) 3 hours later than live. The TV Producer/editors could quickly cutout the mundane chat ….and then show more of the throws and the elimination process the PV and HJ.
4.Your point is valid but will be very difficult to resolve.
5.One possible answer is to insist that all athletes on NGB funding DO visit 10 schools each , as ‘role models’ with a view to inspire the teachers, parents and kids.
