01 Apr Easter Weekend Road Review – 29/03/2013 – 01/04/2013

The Easter weekend saw some decent road 10k performances across the UK and Channel Islands as well as a course record at the Omagh Half Marathon, with the snow that put paid to the regional road relays last weekend no longer a concern.

Salford 10k

It was a good Friday for Tipton Harriers’ Adrian Holliday as he won the notoriously fast and flat Salford 10k. Holliday, 7th last month at the Armagh International 5k in 14:20, took the victory in 30:43, just over a minute outside Dave Lewis’s course record of 29:32.

Simon Deakin (Leeds City AC) repeated his finish from 2008, crossing the line second in 31:02, with Rob Samuel (31:06) of Welsh club Eryri Harriers four seconds further back in third.

Kendal AC’s Rebecca Robinson was the comfortable winner in the women’s event, finishing over a minute clear of her nearest rival in 34:20.

As in the men’s race, the battle for second and third was much closer with just five seconds separating Alison Lavender of Oswestry Olympians (35:22) and home-athlete Tess Walker (35:27) in second and third respectively.

In the first of four races held on consecutive days over the Easter weekend as part of the KPMG Easter Running Festival, twenty one year old John McDonnell came out on top by nine seconds to take the tape in 30:48.

Teammate Rowan Axe (30:57), fourth at both the BUCS XC and Welsh XC Championships in February, dipped just under the thirty one minute mark in second, with Daniel Woodgate recording a personal best of 31:05 to finish third.

2011 European Team Championships 1500m champion Charlene Thomas won the women’s event. The Wakefield athlete took the victory ahead of fellow GB internationals Steph Twell and Emily Pidgeon in a time of 34:47.
